Devon » Sidmouth accommodation

A beautiful coastal town, framed by imposing cliffs of a deep red, Sidmouth offers good accommodation, lovely gardens, Regency style buildings, beaches and shops. With over two hundred years of popularity as a resort, Queen Victoria and her father, the Duke of Kent, are among some of its illustrious visitors. The Duke, sadly, also died here, which is why Victoria gave the local Church of St Giles and St Nicholas a stained glass window as a commemorative donation.
While some may choose to lay back and relax on the shingly beach, others may like the idea of climbing Peak Hill, 500 feet high, and admiring the wonderful view of the coast and town. Salcombe Hill is also fairly impressive and the Sid Valley can be explored from her as well. Otherwise, just wandering through town, the many gardens and parks, and seaside is quite enjoyable.
Byes Park offers a pleasant and peaceful walk by the River Sid (which can be crossed at the ford), while the mile-long Esplanade runs alongside a beautiful, row of Georgian houses on York Terrace. Rich visitors started building these in the 18th century to take advantage of the wonderful views and sea air.
The Heritage Centre gives guided tours of the whole town. At the Sidmouth Museum, one can learn about the local history, and especially about the local lace making tradition.
Climaxing in a town-wide torchlight parade, the locally held International Festival of Folk Arts has featured singers and dancers from the whole world for a number of years.
