Devon » Princetown accommodation

Dartmoor's most elevated town, and one of the highest in all of the United Kingdom, Princetown is more than worth a visit. However, its rough and windy landscapes have historically been a place to escape from rather than visit, being that Dartmoor Prison is located there. The local Prison Museum is quite fascinating.

The Thomas Tyrwitt trail offers a 5 mile walk along an old rail track, leading to the now defunct Foggintor and Sweltor quarries, offering some truly astounding views. If, back from the walk, you get hungry or thirsty, Princetown's three pubs will offer some good food and drinks.

Also of interest is the Dartmoor National Parks High Moorland Visitor Centre, located in the old Duchy Hotel. It was here that Arthur Conan Doyle, of Sherlock Holmes fame, inspired by the place, began writing his celebrated Hound of the Baskervilles, which is set not far from here.
