Since its severe bombing during World War II, Plymouth has been fully rebuilt, but not as well as one could wish! Nevertheless, the modern part of town isn't all bad, including the recently improved shopping centre, and the old part of townis being restored. The city also boasts a university, a variety of theatres, cinemas and all kinds of entertainment.

Plymouth's historic importance is undeniable. The Pilgrim Fathers departed from here aboard the Mayflower. Sir Francis Drake was bowling on Plymouth Hoe when he was told that the Spanish Armada was approaching, in 1588.

The Barbican is easily the most appealing part of town. An active place, numerous pubs, restaurants, galleries, shops and cafés can be found here, as well as a theatre. Close by is the Royal Citadel, a military base Charles II built and which you can visit. Many exhibitions are on display around the Mayflower Steps, and some of the few old buildings to survive the bombing can be found close to the Barbican area: Prysten House, from the 1400s; the Merchant's House, from the 16th century. Black Friars Distillery, formerly a 15th century monastery, is England's oldest gin distillery.

Overlooking Plymouth Sound and Drake's Island is the Hoe. Plymouth Dome, located here, reconstructs typical Plymouth streets and is worth a look.

Also of interest are the City Museum and Art Gallery, including works by Sir Joshua Reynolds, the National Maritime Aquarium, containing Britain's deepest tank, and St Andrews Church, Devon's biggest parish church, and of which only the walls remain from the original building.

Close by attractions include Royal Albert Bridge, Eggbuckland, Crownhill Fort, which is a very well preserved coastal defence, and Buckland Abbey, where Sir Francis Drake was born, and now property of the National Trust.
