Devon » Kingsbridge accommodation

A lovely town, with narrow passageways and cobblestone streets, Kingsbridge is located in South Devon, in a the South Hams region. Once a very active port, dealing in corn and cider in exchange for foreign and exotic commodities arriving from distant places, the town is placed at the end of the Kingsbridge Estuary. Boat trips into this wide area of water, filled with shallow creeks, can be found here, as well as decent fishing.
A pleasant town to wander around, Kingsbridge is home to many fine restaurants, pubs and cafés, as well as strangely named alleys, like Squeezebelly Alley. An old Elizabethan marketplace called the Shambles is one of the most attractive buildings in town. Raised on ancient pillars, it still holds various markets throughout the week, in which diverse goods are sold. The top of the town contains many fine 18th-19th century houses, like the Knowle House, once home to Captain Montagu, a british naturalist who discovered the harrier that now bears his name.
On Fore Street, inside the 17th century Old Grammar School building lies the Cookworthy Museum, comprised of nine galleries. William Cookworthy was born here in the 18th century and is responsible for the discovery of china clay in Cornwall. Some of the very best British porcelain is therefore displayed here. A beautiful wall-surrounded garden can be found on the outside.
