Devon » Exmouth accommodation

Located right where the River Exe ends and the sea begins, Exmouth is a great base to explore this region of Devon and its coast from. A family haven with the largest stretch of sandy seafront in Devon and Cornwall, measuring about 2 miles. There are some good rock pools here too.

One of the many birds to be found at the Exe estuary (which is famous for its wildlife) gives its name to the Avocet Train Line, which offers gorgeous views along its route, whilst the Great Exmouth '00' guage Model Railway is the biggest of its sort. There's also a ferry, which crosses the estuary and heads to Starcross, departing from Exmouth Dock.

Featuring one of Devon's biggest and most active town centres, Exmouth has an indoor market, a shopping centre, all kinds of different shops and a pedestrianised flower-filled shopping area called the Magnolia Centre, perfect for families.

Both churches in Exmouth date back to before the Saxons, while the very name of the town is of ancient Celtic origin. Even Roman coins have been found in the surroundings, evidence of a possible Roman settlement.

The original market place was located in Market Street up until the World War II bombings, of which a memorial can be found at the Strand Gardens. Present day Magnolia Centre, where Market Street meets Chapel Street, used to be the town's centre after the 13th century first commercial growth.

Shallow waters and very few roads held Exmouth back from flourishing. It was only by the 18th century, as tourism to the region began to grow, lured by the medicinal properties of salt water and the astounding views, that the town finally prospered. The Beacon's panoramic Terrace, as well as its many walks and gardens, were then constructed, and the rich and famous moved in.
