Chagford Buttercups

One of the 4 stannary towns in Devon, Chagford, since the 14th century, used to receive the locally mined tin for assessment and branding. Located on the north of Dartmoor, in the very centre of the county, the town includes some interesting shops, good eating and accommodation options, plus a nice open air swimming pool. Nearby Gidleigh Park is a popular country house hotel surrounded by woods and park, and featuring a 2 Michelin starred restaurant.

For more than 4000 years has this region been inhabited, and plenty of prehistoric evidence can still be found around town, as well as more recent stone cottages. Tin and wool brought wealth to Chagford for more than 3 centuries, until mid 19th century.

St. Michael's church was originally built in 1261 but isnow mainly 15th century - within the churchyard is the old Market Cross, now part of the War Memorial. Endecott House, from the 1500s, is one of the numerous old granite structures, and was once home to the local school. Two stores, Webber's and Bowden's, one next to the other, both now active for more than a hundred years, are still run by resident families. Inside Bowden's, a small museum about the olden days can be visited.

On a cliff facing the Teign Valley, about three miles from town, is Castle Drogo. Constructed in the early 20th century, it was designed by Lutyens to ressemble a medieval castle, while featuring contemporary luxuries such as phone access and a hydroelectric system. Many woods and hills around Chagford make for interesting walks, while close by Fernworthy Reservoir offers a chance for fishing.
