Barnstaple Waterfront

Upon the River Taw, and north of Dartmoor, lies Barnstaple, North Devon’s largest town. Once a place of prosperity and a central port for American commerce, this town received its charter from King Aethelstan, grandson of Alfred the Great, in 930 AD. In the old part of the town, you can still see the vestiges of the original wall of the Norman castle, the flowery Queen Anne’s Walk and the Long Bridge, dating back to the 13th century.

Now a flourishing market town, Barnstaple features central pedestrianised streets and a variety of colorful narrow alleyways. Interesting places include the historical Pannier Market and the Museum of North Devon.

Nearby, you’ll find some great beaches, near Woolacombe and Saunton Sands. Closer to the east, lies the lovely Exmoor National Park, with amazing landscapes and great for walking. Stretching over into Somerset, the National Park extends over a large portion of North East Devon.

If you’re looking to discover Tarka Country and hike or ride your bicycle through a part of the 180 mile Tarka Trail or travel by the delightful Tarka Line, Barnstaple is a good starting point. Plus, the Exmoor Steam Railway passes through nearby Bratton Fleming.
