Devon » Axminster accommodation

To the east of Devon, right on the banks of the River Axe, lies an the little old market town of Axminster, best known for the Axminster carpet. Thomas Whitty designed them, in 1775, in a Turkish fashion. They were produced locally at Caster Hill House, which still exists. These top-quality carpets were usually custom-made for the most majestic houses and manors in England, royalty included. By visiting the carpet factory, one can still observe the way in which they’re manufactured.

Originally an ancient Celtic settlement dating back to 300 BC, Axminster still features a church from Saxon times, St Mary's. Its pulpit, dating back to the reign of James I, and its main door, of Norman style, are both of particular interest.
